A month of Gender Blending so far!

8 03 2009

The Gender Blender Blog is one month old! Right in time for International Women’s Day too! Perfect timing, eh?

Time for some shameless plugs…

We have an article coming out in the Observer which will be featured for this week’s issue which will come out tomorrow so keep an eye out for that.

Then on Monday April 6th (6pm Sophia Gordon Multipurpose Room) is Lunafest, a charity film festival that promotes women filmmakers around the world, raises awareness about women’s issues, and supports various women’s organizations. This year there are nine short films that cover a variety of women’s/gender issues ranging from women in wrestling to a transgender person’s experience with reconstructive surgery. Feel free to read more about the films here.

As Lunafest is a fundraiser, 15% of the proceeds go to the Breast Cancer Fund and the remainder goes to an organization of our choice. We chose SAFER: Students Active for Ending Rape as our beneficiary organization. They received some of the proceeds from the Vagina Monologues but we’re such fans of their work and since they’ve suffered some heavy losses from budget cuts and all it doesn’t hurt to help further their cause.

We’re going to start raffling off gift cards from local businesses including the Somerville Movie Theater, Davis Squared, Magpie, and the Danish Pastry House, just to name a few.

Also in April (the 14th, 15th and 16th in the campus center) we are going to have the Clothesline Project. The visual of all the decorated t-shirts hanging up is just so powerful, and it honors survivors by bearing witness to their experiences.

So…to reiterate, happy one month blog-oversary to us! Look out for our column in the Observer. And we hope to see you at Lunafest and the Clothesline Project!
