Unsurprisingly, here is another ad that suggests that meat is oh-so-manly! And this is why there are these great Father’s Day discounts in place – so dads can have all the meat he wants to affirm his masculinity.

Terry O’Neill elected to be the president of NOW

21 06 2009

Terry O’Neill, vice president of the National Organization of Women (NOW) from 2001 – 2005, was elected to be the president, the successor of Kim Gandy. Gandy has been president of NOW for the past eight years, but has been involved with NOW for the past 36 years. About her new leadership in NOW, O’Neill said:

NOW is the organization that fights for the rights of all women no matter the circumstances of their birth, their race or sexual orientation, no matter if they live in poverty or are trying to escape violence. My experience with domestic violence, as an abused wife left me humiliated and embarrassed. I only began to talk about this publically five years ago as I realized that to keep quiet was to continue the abuse. I want to empower women and telling my story does just that. Women are fed up with persistent inequality and are ready for change. I am honored and eager to lead NOW in making that change.

NOW is one of the most prominent and largest feminist organizations in this country. It has a lot of credibility and seems to be the number one go-to source for the mainstream media. Earlier when O’Neill was running, she said:

Women around the country are fed up with persistent inequality and ready to put justice for women at center stage. I’m ready to lead NOW in making that happen. Upon election, I’ll launch a series of action campaigns to demand the things women need to achieve real equality. I’ll also restore NOW’s financial health by bringing together our vendors, donors and leaders to work with me in implementing a plan to reverse our membership losses and renew our message and mission.

Gandy will retire from her position on July 20th. It’s exciting that NOW will be under new leadership. We’ll stay tuned and see what happens.
